Dr. Anita N. Blowers has a B.A. in sociology and a M.S. and Ph.D. degree in criminal justice from the University at Albany State University of New York. Dr. Blowers is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice & Criminology and an Affiliated Professor in the Department of Gerontology at UNC Charlotte where she teaches a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate level courses, including courses on the criminal court system.
Dr. Blowers' research focuses on court processing, sentencing, elder abuse & neglect, Latinos and the criminal justice system, intimate and family violence, and general issues pertaining to criminal justice policy and legal analysis. In addition to her scholarship in the field of criminal justice, she also conducts research on topics such as academic advising, student retention, and assessment of student learning. Dr. Blowers has published in numerous criminal justice and law review journals and has written several book chapters.
Professional and Community Involvement
Dr. Blowers conducted several research projects on the Mecklenburg County Court system including an assessment of prosecutorial staffing and an analysis of the Domestic Violence Court. She also served on the Board of Directors for Lake Norman Charter School and is actively involved in the Crossroads Charlotte initiative. Dr. Blowers is a member of the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
